The Dome is Opened to the World

Februrary 16, 2003

Today’s PeaceMaker gathering was held in the ground level of the Peace Dome. The Peace Dome is still under construction and today would be the day we would open it to the world by cutting the airform exposing the elliptical opening.

Today we would consider the life and words of Tenzin Gyatso, the l4th Dalai Lama of Tibet.

The opening of the Peace Dome was a symbolic act of opening this structure to the world. The handful of us who live here and build it, care for it, daily have always had the sense that the Peace Dome belongs to the world. It is not just a building on the campus of the College of Metaphysics. As it has moved through its stages it has taken on the quality of a sacred site, one people will dream about visiting from the time of their childhood. I can imagine pilgrimages from every part of the globe to the hamlet of Windyville, Missouri, for the express purpose of being, praying, breathing in the Peace Dome.
When I read the words of the Dalai Lama, I resonated with them.

"It is my dream that the entire Tibetan plateau should become a free refuge where humanity and nature can live in peace and in harmonious balance. It would be a place where people from all over the world could come to seek the true meaning of peace within themselves, away from the tensions and pressures of much of the rest of the world. Tibet could indeed become a creative center for the promotion and development of peace."

As will, I whole-heartedly believe, the Peace Dome. – Dr. Barbara Condron from the soon-to-be-released book, PeaceMaking: 9 Lessons for Changing Yourself, Your Relationships, and Your World
Three dozen people gathered at the Dome on a cold and snowy February Sunday. Mark Starr, chief engineer, made the first cut into the airform of the dome on the south ground-level side. Each of us took turns making the slit bigger and bigger and BIGGER until we freed the glass panel opening (below). It was an amazing experience, both exhilirating and poignant, sad and happy. It was like coming out of the womb. Just as the birth of a child transforms a man and woman forever, so this experience transformed each of us, the College of Metaphysics, and the world.
Symbolic and literal, the removal of the airform signified a major step in our journey to make this Dome a presence on the planet. Now, as we take the steps that will complete the dome, we do so knowing full well that the Peace Dome now belongs to the world. Make plans to join us October 11th!
