Columbia, Missouri (Paul Madar reporting)

In Columbia, there was a Peace Potluck dinner at eight o’clock pm.  A new student, Jared, and two of his friends came.  Alexandra, Vivienna, and Dr. Christine Madar were also present.  We talked about peace and the New Year until 9:00 PM when I led a workshop, “The Three Pillars of Transformation:  Concentration, Meditation and Visualization.”  We discussed the art and science of concentration – how it stills the mind.  We listed and prioritized goals for the New Year, complete with purpose for each and next-action steps.  We discussed how to visualize each as a whole creation.

After a break two more friends of the School branch joined in a discussion of Gratitude and meditation for the Universal Hour of Peace.  We started by lighting candles from the Gandhi candle, which was lit by a candle, etc., lit by Gandhi himself long ago.  Each shared what we are grateful for in the last year and what look forward to next year.  We read in unison the Universal Peace Covenant at midnight as One Voice.  I then led a meditation centered on gratitude and prayer to open the mind and heart, and kept our full attention on receiving directly from the Source.  We kept our candles as reminders of our intentions and open-hearted gratitude for what we have already received.  Next year we will host an interfaith gathering and add several community representatives to give their thoughts and readings as well.

Kansas City, Kansas (Matt Valois reporting)

The Universal Hour of Peace experience in Kansas City was very quiet and introspective.  Natalie and I spent a couple of hours before the reading of the Universal Peace Covenant planning 2010 activities at our School branch.  We desire to create a School branch that embodies awakening and creativity coupled with deep transformations and self-discovery.  To bring forth this vision we created plans to have consistent classes and events by scheduling weekly times we will gather to set up lectures throughout the year, postering, and other ways to involve the student body.  Our goal is to increase the number of students we teach by five each month.

After spending moments in silence before reading the Universal Peace Covenant, we read it together at midnight amidst numerous displays of fireworks around the area.  It was like a song of peace, whose presence promises to steadily grow throughout the year as the fireworks die away.  What we are creating will be permanent and lasting within the hearts of those we serve this coming year.  After reading the peace covenant, we spent some time creating mind maps and vision for our lives individually.
