COLLEGE OF METAPHYSICS, why a Peace Dome?

An Invitation to the Whole World

by Barbara Condron

Over the years by far the most common question people ask School of Metaphysics students is, "What is metaphysics?" Once this answer is explained ("meta" meaning after and "physis" meaning nature, thus metaphysics is a science tracing the original principles - Universal Laws and Truths - constituting our nature as intelligent beings), the next logical question is "Why here? Why not in California, or New York?" Now more than ever I am understanding the answer to this question and I wanted to share with you my insights.

October 8th, the School of Metaphysics will mark its 30th year as a presence upon this planet. There were many expansive ideas that came out of the United States in the 1960's. Ideas of (unconditional) love, conscience (objecting), being here now, and (altered states of) consciousness were openly discussed. The ideas were as timeless as creation, what was new was the level of awareness and the willingness to act upon that awareness, ie. the Civil Rights movement and the Peace Corps. Change was happening everywhere in our country.

By the '70's, we had put man on the moon and on earth movements of what would come to be loosely grouped into a category called "new age" were springing up in all parts of society. Environmental movements, New Age magazines, TM and yoga centers, and the like began their ascent as the collective mind was opened.

It is easy for people to look at the date of incorporation of SOM and lump it into the collective. This is in most cases complimentary, for there are many people - light workers they are often called - who are responding to the urge to make a difference. It is a bit misleading however. Of all the groups and organizations started in this time period, the School of Metaphysics is one springing forth from the inner levels of consciousness. SOM was not the brainchild of some one person, or even a group of people. Rather it, like peace, is an idea whose time has come. SOM exists to accelerate the evolution of humanity and this is why it continues to be a presence in the world.

The answer to "Why here?" is more accurately defined in the question, "Why in the Midwest?" A bit of history, anthropology, and religious education reveals the answer most clearly. At General Assembly, the directors convened for the first time in the upper chamber of the Peace Dome. It is a sacred space and you know it the moment you enter. The energy envelopes you, holding you for a timeless moment in limitless space. The reality of PEACE moves through you. It is as if the Peace Dome is centered at the core of the Earth with its eyes lifted to the stars. Here at last is the balancing point made manifest, the neutralizing of the polarity on our planet focalized in the Middle East. Every day in a hand full of acres called by those of three different religions "holy land", people kill other people. With such conflict, such animosity between men, a balance point must exist on the planet. Only one area on Earth is referred to as the Middle East, and only one area on Earth is commonly known as the Middle West. Can you think of reasons why?

As we talked, the magnitude of the role we play in the world swept over me again and again. Years ago we set into motion and currently sustain the sixth Earth chakra for the acceleration of evolution. We help energize the icosahedron grid currently being set into motion around our planet. Now the Peace Dome, the first intentional building on our College of Metaphysics campus, will be a living reminder that people of different races, creeds, cultures, religions, ideas can come together in friendship from desire rather than crisis, from mutual yearning rather than mutual pain, from love rather than divisiveness, from unity rather than common enemy. Our color-blindedness and tone-deafness bring forth a willingness to embrace all people. Our respect for the Creator and all of creation frees us to accept all living beings. The benefits of countless hours of concentration and meditation entrain the mind so we awake to the reality of connectedness among all beings. Here at the Peace Dome we will invite the world to join us as we live what we teach.

Among the many ideas born that night College Graduate student Paul Madar spoke of inviting people to bring a native stone to place in a wall, perhaps in our Zen garden. Receiving his thought, an image of another wall half a world away came to mind, a Mideast wall that knows pain and suffering, so much so it is called a wailing wall. Here, in the Midwest we will build a very different kind of wall, one that uplifts mankind by supporting his highest ideals of respect, cooperation, love, and peace.

As College student Erika Scholz commented, "It reminds me of the first time I prepared dinner for my parents, after I was out on my own. I was excited and nervous. I was inviting my parents to my place. For years, we have gone out to others, and now we are inviting the world to visit us."

What perfect timing, the year of the Saturn return of the School. It is the beginning of a new phase of growth and maturity for our School, and will be the same for us as we align our consciousness with it. Together, we will bring Light to the planet in a way it has yet to behold.
